Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a consignment & thrift shop? -- Consignment shops are usually for profit establishments where consigner's bring clothes & accessories to the shop for resale. When the items are sold, the money is split between the store & consigner. These store are very selective about the type of items they will accept, so you will usually find a higher quality of gently used items in these types of stores, and they will be in the cleanest most pristine condition.

Thrift shops are usually not for profit establishments run by churches or other charity organizations such as Cancer Care & the like. Items are donated and profits go to whatever organization sponsors the store. You will find all sorts of merchandise in these stores besides clothing. They carry furniture, books, toys, household items, home decor & more.

What are some of the labels we may see on this trek? -- You will be seeing every type of clothing & accessory from Chanel on down. You will see Prada, Gucci, St. John, Louis Vuitton, Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo, Tahari, Theory, etc. You will also see more middle of the road designers like Ann Taylor, Jones NY etc.

At the consignment shops you can find Chanel, Prada, Jimmy Choo & the like shoes for $150- $200 or designer handbags for $100 & up. The prices at the thrift shops are considerably less, and during clearance sales the prices will be even lower. There are choices on this trek for every budget & style.

What should I bring? -- Bring cash, credit cards and checks.

What should I wear? -- There will be lots of walking, so comfortable shoes are a must. You will be trying on clothes all day, so your outfit should be something that can be taken off and on quickly and easily. Shoes that slip on and off without laces or buckles are best. A body suit with a skirt or pants that slip on and off quickly or a dress that buttons down the front or wraps are some suggestions. You will want your hands to be free, so wear a fanny pack or a handbag with a long strop that you can sling across your body. Also, make sure your handbag is big enough to fit your free book! If it rains, bring an umbrella but be sure it is a small one with a hand strap.
